Cold War star Joanna Kulig took the prize for best actress at the awards in Seville, Spain. Jarosław Kamiński received an award for his editing of the film.

Pawlikowski said it was “fantastic” to be at the awards gala.

The movie, Poland’s entry for a foreign-language Oscar, is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The cast includes leading Polish actors Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza and Borys Szyc.

The film won Pawlikowski the best director award at the Cannes Festival in May.

In September, the movie landed the top Golden Lions award at the 43rd Polish Film Festival in the coastal city of Gdynia.

Pawlikowski’s feature Ida won an Oscar in 2015 for best foreign-language film.

Meanwhile the European Film Award in the Animated Feature Film category on Saturday went to the Polish-Spanish team of Damian Nenow and Raul de la Fuente, for Another Day of Life.

The film is the gripping story of a three-month-long journey that renowned Polish reporter Ryszard Kapuściński took across war-ravaged Angola in the 1970s. It combines animation and action scenes with documentary sequences.
