The Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service (TOPR) has warned hikers to stay away from trails amid continuing snowfall.

The snow cover on the Tatra’s Kasprowy Wierch peak has grown to 165 centimetres, with the mercury at the top of the mountain plummeting to 16 degrees Celsius below zero, Poland’s PAP news agency reported on Thursday.

The avalanche risk level has been raised from moderate to high.

No one was hurt after huge masses of snow swept down a mountainside in the Przełęcz Krzyżne area in the Tatras on Wednesday, public broadcaster TVP Info reported.
