The two other productions in the running for the accolade in the best foreign film category are BlacKkKlansman, directed by Spike Lee, and Shoplifters, directed by Hirokazu Koreeda.

A jury verdict will be announced on January 28.

Cold War went on release in Sweden in mid-November, gaining the highest five-star ranking from the country’s two major dailies, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet.

Cold War is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The movie in December won five European Film Awards, including for best film, director, screenwriter and actress.

It is one of nine films in the running for an Oscar for best foreign language film.
