The Financial Times described Netrebko’s performance as “ravishing” and wrote that Beczała “is in sterling form as Adriana’s lover Maurizio, making a deep impression in his brooding aria L’anima ho stanca”.

The New York Times wrote: “The tenor Piotr Beczała, singing with youthful fervor, ardent lyricism and clarion top notes, is ideal as the impetuous Maurizio.”

Beczała’s predecessors in the role of Maurizio at the Met have included Enrico Caruso and Placido Domingo.

There are six more performances of Adriana Lecouvreur this season, on January 8, 12, 16, 19, 23 and 26.

The matinee performance on January 12 will be broadcast as part of the Met Live series to over 2,200 venues in 70 countries, including Poland.
