The association lauded the film as a “ heartrending” tale of passionate love.

It also praised the movie for its “excellent black-and-white cinematography” and its “intense storyline, brilliant staging, great performances and a soundtrack which sublimely underlines the dramaturgy of this masterpiece."

The movie is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

In December it won five European Film Awards, including for best film, director, screenwriter and actress.

It is one of nine movies in the running for an Oscar for best foreign-language film.

The movie stars leading Polish actors Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza and Borys Szyc.
