Kevin Ruane, a veteran BBC journalist and broadcaster who covered the rise of Poland’s Solidarity movement in the 1980s, has died aged 86.

His funeral took place in Canberra, Australia, on December 7.
A brief obituary in Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper has described him as “a friend of Poland.”
Ruane served as the BBC correspondent in Moscow in the late 1970s.
Later, as the broadcaster’s Eastern Europe correspondent, he reported on the emergence of Poland’s Solidarity freedom movement and on the imposition of martial law in the country by its communist regime.
He was based in Warsaw for several years.
Ruane was the author of the book Reasons of State. To Kill a Priest about Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, a staunch Solidarity supporter and critic of the regime’s abuses, who was murdered by secret police in October 1984.
The book has been translated into Polish.
