Rugby Theatre in England will be staging a Polish-English bi-lingual production of Romeo and Juliet as part of the Open Stages Project of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The English parts have already been cast: Philippa Cottle will appear as Juliet and Monika Rozanski, known from the ‘Poles Apart’ feature broadcast by BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, has been cast as Lady Montague.
The company is currently looking for amateur Polish bi-lingual actors to play members of the Montague household, including Romeo, Benvolio, Abraham, Balthasar and Montague, as well as for females to appear in some of the crowd scenes.
The rehearsals are due to start next month and the premiere is scheduled for 12 May.
The idea for this bi-lingual production comes from director Robert Sloan, who has Polish neighbours and wanted to learn more about the Polish people. He says it is going to be an energetic, modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic.
The aim of RSC’s Open Stages project is to support amateur theatre groups and developing their bonds with the world of professional theatre. The most successful of these productions will be invited to Stratford-upon-Avon. (mk/pg)
