February's statistics mark a 0.2 percent rise since January, with 2,337,400 now registered as unemployed.

The level of increase echoes that of last year when unemployment rose from 13.2 percent to 13.4 percent over the same period.

The data also reveals that the rise in unemployment in the first months of 2013 has affected men three times more than it has women, a trend that was also observed in the first months of 2012.

Analysts note that this may be due to problems in the construction industry. Not only is some of the work seasonal, but the industry was especially badly hit by bankruptcies in 2012, making up 25 percent of the bankruptcies in the first quarter of 2012. (nh)
