Some 2200 Biedronka stores are currently in business in Poland, and the target has been set to reach 3000 outlets by the end of next year.

The company has revealed that it is also hoping to try and balance out its larger stores with smaller branches in city centres.

“A two-way approach has been planned: smaller stores in cities and franchised ones in rural areas,” a statement released by the company confirmed.

Jeronimo Martins, the Portuguese parent company of Biedronka is also looking to increase the number of branches of its cosmetic store chain Hebe.

There are 96 Hebe outlets in Poland at present, and Jeronimo Martins aims to open a further 200 by the close of 2016.

Biedronka was founded by Polish entrepreneur Maruisz Switalski in 1995. Two years later, it was purchased by Jeronimo Martins. (nh)
