Besides connections with Wroclaw in south west Poland, passengers can also take advantage of a link with the north, via Modlin Airport's connection with Gdansk.

Two more services are due to be launched in July, linking Gdansk with Krakow and Wroclaw.

Until this week, struggling national airline LOT has had a monopoly on domestic flights.

Promotional prices for the first wave of Ryanair's domestic flights also pose a threat to rail services.

A single from Wroclaw to Gdansk with Ryanair can be purchased for 19 zloty (4.5 euro), with the journey time estimated at one hour.

Meanwhile, the cheapest train ticket from Wroclaw to Gdansk costs 65 zloty (15.5 euro) with a journey time of just over six hours. (nh)
