Polish pork exports in the first quarter of 2014 were 6 percent less than over the same period in 2013, with Poland losing several key importers over the African Swine Fever crisis.

The statistics, which were compiled by the state Agricultural Market Agency (ARR) reveal that Poland exported 191,000 tonnes of pork products in the first four months of 2013.

Russia led the way with an embargo on EU pork products after an outbreak of ASF in wild boar was confirmed in late January in Lithuania and Poland, near the Belarusian border.

Several other countries, including Ukraine, China and Japan imposed a block on Polish pork products, although Ukraine lifted its embargo in June.

However, Andrzej Gantner of the Federation of Polish Food Producers has stressed that food exports could have been considerably worse, and that most of Poland's surplus pork that resulted from embargoes was sold to EU member states. (nh)
