In an interview with Polish Radio, chairman of the Polish Fruit Growers Association Miroslaw Maliszewski said that several Polish apple exporters are currently preparing a business trip to India, which will include taking part in trade fairs in Mumbai.

“India buys 200,000 tonnes of apples each year, so why shouldn't they buy some of ours as part of that pool?"

Maliszewski forecast that if all goes well in Mumbai, Poland could begin exporting to India 'this season.'

Russia's announcement that it was blocking imports of Polish fruit and vegetables followed the latest package of EU sanctions against Moscow as a result of the Ukrainian crisis.

Since the embargo was confirmed, Poles have been using social media to encourage their fellow countrymen to buy home-grown apples.

However, Maliszewski has revealed that Polish fruit growers are already attempting to salvage ties with Russian fruit importers.

He said that a group of Russian businessmen and journalists has been invited to Poland and that they are due to take part in conciliatory talks this week.

“Big politics is big politics, but we fruit growers and producers want to have good relations with companies over there [in Russia],” he argued.

Meanwhile, Maliszewski says that besides India, America is also a potential market for Polish apple-growers, as well as North Africa and the Persian Gulf. (nh)
