In 2013, Poles spent a total of 25.1 billion zloty (around 6 billion euro) on meals outside the home: a year earlier the figure was 24.3 billion zloty (5.8 billion euro).

During communist times, eating out was rare in Poland, with few good restaurants and poor service in those that were in business.

Since the fall of the communist regime, however, eating out has become increasingly popular – a trend that continued last year, according to new data.

The sector has been growing steadily in the past decade and spending has increasing over that time by almost 8 billion zloty (1.9 billion euro).

According to a report compiled by Macro Cash and Carry, it is mostly Poles aged 18-24 that eat out – with almost 64 percent of them do so at least once a week.

Only 7.6 percent of those over 65 eat outside their homes once a week.

When eating out, Poles do not favour their national dishes, with Asian dishes, pizza and burgers the most popular at lunch time, with Polish cuisine relegated to fourth place.

In the case of food eaten outside home in the evenings, pizza is on the top of the list. (kw/pg)
