Warsaw's Modlin airport named one of worst in Europe

“There were not enough seats at the gate for the number of people waiting to board the flight. Our flight was delayed so the wait was excruciating,” a traveller is quoted as saying by the Guide to Sleeping in Airports web site, which has compiled the ranking.

Paris's Beauvais-Tille, the French capital's third airport, was ranked as Europe's worst, with Frankfurt Hahn in second place and Bergamo Orio al Serio in third.

Modlin's spokesperson Magdalena Bojarska told Polish Radio that problems mentioned in the ranking result from the specific role of the airport.

“This is not a place where you spend a lot of time,” she said. “It does not have comfortable space for sleeping, but there is no need for that, because we do not have night flights.”

The airport in Modlin, around 40 km from Warsaw, originally opened in the summer of 2012, though a few months later it had to be shut down after cracks appeared on the runway.

Opening again in July 2013, it has since failed to attract major airlines to the airport, with only one major airline, Ryanair, currently operating there. (kw/pg)
