The figure marks a two percentage point drop over the previous month, with the number at its lowest in four years.

Analysts polled by daily Puls Biznesu expected unemployment to drop from September’s 11.5 percent to 11.4 percent in October.

Monika Kurtek, Chief Economist at Bank Pocztowy, told Polish Radio that she expects the figure to remain unchanged in November and only rise slightly in December.

On Tuesday, GUS also released retail sales figures for October. These rose by 2.3 percent over the previous year.

Bank Pocztowy’s Kurtek said that the improving state of the economy could induce Poles to spend more. In a conversation with Polish Radio, Kurtek said that compounded with deflation, Poles can afford a larger basket of goods that even a few months ago. (rg/jb)
