EC rubberstamps EUR 293 mln for Polish urban transport

The European Commission approved cohesion funds to the tune of EUR 293 million, Wednesday, for public transport projects in Warsaw, Łódź, Szczecin and Poznań.

“These investments aim to modernise the public transport systems in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way and will provide commuters and visitors with improved travel conditions, higher comfort and shorter journey times,” the European Commission published in a statement.

The funds are to be spent from the “Infrastructure and Environment” operational programme, with the investments billed to be completed by the end of this year.

European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu said in the statement that the investments “will boost competitiveness and strengthen the economy in the whole country”.

Around EUR 133 million from the funds will be allocated to the purchase of 85 new trams, 22 buses as well as new rolling stock for urban sections of Warsaw’s railway lines.

“With this investment, 1.8 million more people will be served by the upgraded urban transport system in 2016,” the EC maintains.

Other invesments include the construction of a “multi-modal hub” at Łódź Fabrczyna railway station, with the entire cost billed at EUR 110.8 million, of which the EU is financing EUR 85.8 million.

Meanwhile, the western city of Poznań is to receive EUR 33.2 million for renovation of its transport network, while the north-western Baltic port of Szczecin is to receive EUR 41.7 million for the construction and renovation of its tram network. (jb)
