Warner Music snaps up Poland's oldest record label

Warner Music Poland (WMP) has purchased state-owned record label Polskie Nagrania, Poland's oldest record label

In spite of its impressive back catalogue, Polskie Nagrania had gone into liquidation, and yesterday's sale marked the third time that the company had gone to auction.
WMP acquired the label for PLN 8.1 million.
''According to our current estimates, we have bought about 33,000 to 34,000 recordings of the most important Polish artists, taking in classical, jazz, rock and pop.''
Recordings include those by sixties legends Czesław Niemen and Marek Grechuta, jazz legends Tomasz Stańko and Krzysztof Komeda, as well as albums of composers including Lutoslawski, Gorecki and Kilar.
Polskie Nagrania was founded in 1956, during the communist era, and the state-owned company had a monopoly on the business. (nh)
