The overall cost of the investment has been estimated at EUR 225 million, and it is hoped that the project, which is already under construction, will be completed within two years.

Every potential EU investment that concerns projects valued at over EUR 50 million requires a special decision from the European Commission.

It has been argued that the new system will not only be more beneficial to the environment, but also more cost-effective than the current arrangement.

The key element of the project is a rubbish incinerator which alone costs over EUR 174 million.

It is scheduled to process 210,000 tonnes of waste per year, from 750,000 people.

The outstanding costs will be covered by local authorities in partnership with private businesses. (nh)
