Despite a rate cut which is expected to be announced on Wednesday, interest rates in Poland are seen to remain among the highest in the EU, experts say.

Experts interviewed by the PAP news agency largely agree that the rate setting Monetary Policy Council (RPP) will drop the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points from the current record-low 2.0 percent.

However, even if the cut is introduced, Poland's rates would still be among the highest in the European Union. AT present the ECB refi interest rate stands at 0.05 percent.

Four out of the 22 analysts polled by PAP expect rates to be cut by as much as 50 basis points, while two predicted that the RPP will leave interest rates unchanged. In recent months, many economists also expected the RPP to cut rates, but it has remained at the current level since the last cut in September 2014.

In the EU, only Romania (2.25 percent) and Croatian (5.0 percent) have higher interest rates than Poland. (rg)
