State-controlled Grupa Azoty, one of Poland’s largest plastics and fertiliser manufacturers, has announced that it will invest in a new propene plant at its site in Police, north-west Poland.

The PLN 1.7 billion investment will create the largest such plant in Europe by 2019, and is the largest undertaking in the company’s history.

Treasury Minister Włodzimierz Karpiński told journalists in Warsaw, Friday, that the construction of the plant will create 1,000 jobs.

“[A further] 200 jobs will be created for the highly qualified employees for the servicing of this investment,” Karpiński said, adding that “this enormous and highly profitable investment will strengthen Grupa Azoty’s [market] position”.

The initial project for the plant was drafted 6 years ago, with Grupa Azoty deliberating a number of sites for the investment.

“Kędzierzyn, Tarnów, Police, Puławy [were all possible locations], but we chose Police because it has a marine port which would guarantee deliveries of the raw materials needed for production from across the globe, and as such it would be cheaper to import materials in large volumes,” said Deputy Chairman of Grupa Azoty, Krzysztof Jałosiński.

Propene is used as a raw material for a wide variety of products. It is a gas at room temperature, and is used in the manufacturing of plastic propylene. Currently, around 150,000 metric tons of propene are processed in Poland annually. (jb)
