Poland has taken a baby step to ending the two-tier labour market with some workers under solid protections and others living precariously on endlessly renewed temporary contracts.

The government approved on Tuesday a 36-month cap on temporary contracts – and this includes a three-month trial period.
The 36-month limit on temporary work contracts applies to all work for a single employer, even if there are gaps in employment. After that period, the contract will automatically become indefinite.
Temporary contracts have applied to fully 27 percent of workers, a higher percentage than in the notoriously unequal labour markets of Spain or Greece with the long-term “ins” and the “outs”, sometimes described as a new social class, the “precariat”. (an)
