According to Jakub Karnowski, who confirmed the plans in an interview with money.pl, services linking Warsaw with Gliwice and Bielsko-Biała could be running as early as June.

Since December 2014, connections between the Polish capital and Gdynia, Katowice, Kraków and Wrocław have been in action.

An additional route to Rzeszów is also in the pipeline, but Karnowski said the latter service would not be running as soon as had initially been hoped for.

Karnowski also commented on negotiations concerning internet access on the trains.

''Several years ago, when the contracts were signed, it was not anticipated that the internet would be such a universal phenomenon,’’ he claimed.

''I should stress that in 260 Intercity carriages there is internet, but indeed when it comes to the carriages we are most proud of, there is none.''

PKP has been facing criticism amid claims that French firm Alstom is demanding an allegedly astronomical price for internet access.

Karnowski argued that such initial demands were ''normal’’ in business relations, and that negotiations are ongoing. (nh)
