Future of public radio debated at EBU conference

A meeting of European broadcasters hosted by Polish Radio on the occasion of its 90th anniversary is set to tackle the tasks ahead for public radio broadcasters.

“Either we’re the best or we will dissappear,” said Polish Radio chairman Andrzej Siezieniewski at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) meeting, adding that radio broadcasting currently has vast technological capabilities.
Nevertheless, Siezieniewski said that public radio has a challenge ahead in order to stay ahead of other private broadcasters.
“If we remain the same as we were over the past decades, then we will drop out of the market in a very short time,” he said, adding that “we are threatened by marginalisation and a loss of listeners”.
The European Broacasting Union was set up in 1950 and incorporates public broadcasters from 56 countries, with an annual meeting held in one of the member countries to discuss key issues for the media.
Polish Radio has been hailed as a leader in broadcasting in the Central and Eastern European region for being the first public radio to broadcast digitally on DAB+. (jb)
