The winning banknote was produced by the Polish Security Printing Works (PWPW) for the National Bank of Poland (NBP), to a design by Andrzej Heidrich.

The note was made to mark the 100th anniversary of the launch of the Polish Legions, a formation that fought as part of the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, under Piłsudski's command.

Poles had been granted far-reaching autonomy in the Habsburg empire, contrary to their peers in the Russian and Prussian partitions.

Following World War I, on 11 November 1918, Piłsudski proclaimed Polish independence and became the key figure in Polish politics until his death in 1935. (nh)
