The bank accounts held by 18 cities in Poland are managed by just six major banks, with PKO Band Polski topping the list.

PKO BP holds the accounts for seven cities, having recently taken the Katowice account and as many as 63 related departmental accounts away from ING Bank Sląski.

Other cities managed by PKO BP are Rzeszów, Gorzów Wiekopolski and Zielona Góra. In second place, Pekao SA holds teh accounts for five major cities, including Białystok, Bydgoszcz, Gdańsk, Kraków and Lublin.

Other banks holding municipal accounts include Citi Handlowy (Warsaw, Olsztyn), Millennium (Opole, Toruń), as well as ING Bank Śląski (Kielce) and Getin (Łódź).

PKO BP also holds a dominating position with local governments in terms of lending, with the bank holding a 17-percent share of loans to local authorities. (jb)
