“Poland boasts the highest growth-to-well-being coefficient in our analysis. The country’s strong showing is due to robust gains in a number of dimensions, including employment, civil society, governance, and environment,” reads the SEDA report by the global management consulting firm.

In terms of “either creating high levels of, or making significant progress in, well-being for their citizens”, BCG said that a handful of countries such as Norway, Rwanda and Poland, stand out.

A green economy

The firm also noted that many countries base all their energy on economic growth at all costs, often neglecting other areas which are important to society. In this case, Poland was a notable exception.

“In fact, our results reveal a negative correlation between economic growth and environment in general. Still, while some other fast-growing nations also drive economic growth at the expense of the environment, there are notable exceptions. Poland, for example, posted strong GDP growth but still managed to be among the top countries in terms of recent progress in the environment,” the report, published on Thursday, read.

“It has been a long time since a report flattered our country in such a way,” wrote Newsweek Polska.

“They praise us for the simultaneous attainment of better economic indicators, environmental improvements and infrastructure.”

In the overall ranking evaluating the quality of life in 149 countries around the world, Poland ranked 31st. The country ranks higher than regional peers Slovakia and Lithuania, but lower than Estonia, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.

But it is not only developing economies that have been left in the dust by Poland. "Poland is outperforming the UK when it comes to education as well as being the world leader in converting economic growth into the well-being of its citizens, according to a new report," reads an article in the UK's Guardian.
