This year’s droughts which have plagued agriculture around the country since May have dented the potential for a record year in sugar production – which in Poland is mostly made from sugar beet.

The National Union of Sugar Beet Growers estimates that this year, sugar production will not exceed 1.6 million tonnes, compared with two million tonnes and 1.7 million tonnes seen in the 2014/2015 and the 2013/2014 seasons respectively.

Weather conditions not only affect the harvest of the root vegetables, but also the concentration of sugars.

The Union estimates that harvest this year will not exceed 60 tonnes per hectare, while the sugar concentration will be around 17 percent. (rg)
