Gdańsk Port sets new record

Poland’s largest port has handled 32.5 million tons of cargo in the first ten months of this year, already above the 32.3 million tons handled over the whole of 2014.

The cargo tonnage for the first ten months is also 13 percent higher than the comparable period of 2014, and is above previous expectations.
It is thought that Gdańsk Port might exceed 35 million tons by the end of this year.
There was a particularly notable rise in the amount of coal passing through the port, up 30 percent from 2014, and liquid fuels which were up by 20 percent from last year.
This is now the third year in a row in which the port has managed to beat its previous record, and the owners expect that activity will continue to increase in future.
Under a strategy for the port announced this August there will be investment worth PLN 8 billion (EUR 1.9 billion) into the port and its surroundings by 2020. It is hoped that the volume of cargo handled will treble in the next decade.
Investments include a new deepwater berth, which once opened at the end of 2016 will double the capacity of Gdańsk’s Deepwater Container Terminal, and a modernized 16km rail link from the port to the rest of Poland’s railway network. (sl/nh/rk)
