Unemployment in Poland falls below 7 percent: Eurostat

Seasonally adjusted unemployment in Poland fell to 6.9 percent in January, well below the EU average of 8.9 percent, the EU's statistical office said.

The euro area (EA19) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 10.3 percent in January 2016, down from 10.4 percent in December 2015, and from 11.3 percent in January 2015. This is the lowest rate recorded in the euro area since August 2011,” Eurostat said.

The agency explained that the EU28 unemployment rate was 8.9 percent in January 2016, down from 9.0 percent in December 2015, and from 9.8 percent in January 2015. This, Eurostat said, is the lowest rate recorded in the EU28 since May 2009.

Among the Member States, the lowest unemployment rates in January 2016 were recorded in Germany (4.3 percent), the Czech Republic (4.5 percent), Malta and the United Kingdom (both 5.1 percent, November data for the UK).

Meanwhile, the highest unemployment rates were observed in Greece (24.6 percent in November 2015) and Spain (20.5 percent).

According to Poland's Central Statistical Office (GUS) unemployment in January stood at 10.3 percent. (rg)
