The PLN 3.3 billion (USD 0.84 billion, EUR 0.75 billion) plant is due to open in October near the town of Września.

The corporation’s Polish subsidiary, Volkswagen Poznań, says it has so far taken on more than 1,200 workers and is continuing to recruit for the factory’s second and third shifts. Ultimately, employment at the plant is expected to reach around 3,000.

The factory, which is 95 percent completed, will produce the automaker’s new-generation Volkswagen Crafter model, rolling out up to 100,000 cars a year, according to Dagmara Prystacka, a spokeswoman for Volkswagen Poznań.

Volkswagen also operates a factory in the western city of Poznań, where it makes its VW Caddy and VW Transporter models. (pk)
