America may invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Poland, the Rzeczpospolita daily has said a week after the first US Army troops arrived in the country to bolster NATOs eastern flank.

Experts cited by the daily said the US might spend some PLN 13.97 billion (USD 3.4 billion, EUR 3.19 billion) on NATOs “increased defence potential” and a fair portion of that may be spent in Poland.

However, the daily added that prognoses are based on promises made under America's outgoing administration and it remains unclear exactly what US President-elect Donald Trump's foreign policy plans are.

Already in the pipeline are the extension of a runway at a military airport in Łask, in central Poland, and construction of a missile base in Redzikowo, northern Poland.

Local governments are also set to gain from the US military presence in Poland, the daily said.

“The number of American soldiers in Poland will reach a few thousand,” the CEO of the Centre for Strategic Analysis and Policy, Mariusz Kordowski, said. “It is a chance for local entrepreneurs from the service sector,” he added.

In Żagań, western Poland, a professional laundry service has been set up to serve US troops, restaurants have been opened and local authorities are putting pressure on developers to speed up construction of a new shopping mall. (vb/pk)
