At the end of December, year-on-year inflation stood at 0.8 percent.

Prices in January were 0.4 percent up on December 2016.

Analysts had expected inflation to climb 1.7 percent year on year and 0.3 percent month on month.

Piotr Kuczyński from brokerage and investment advisor Xelion said the rise in inflation was the result of higher food prices among other factors.

He added that some experts believe that prices in Poland will rise for two or three months but then fall. Others predict that inflation this year will exceed two percent.
