Parmley, who promotes the business interests abroad of the City of London, said he is not worried that Britain’s looming divorce from the UK will be detrimental to Polish-British ties.

“We can’t just wait around for the politicians to give us the green light, so my view is we press ahead as if we are going to get business as usual,” he said, adding: “Actually I’m not looking for business as usual, I’m looking for more business in both directions”.

He said he was certain that as time went on – with Britain scheduled to permanently depart the European Union in March 2019 – the British government would negotiate an exit strategy most beneficial to the City.

“We’d like to continue to have access to the single market ... at the same time that the EU27 has got access to London because we like to think of the city as a European asset.

Our second priority, that the best people can come to London with the best ideas and get the best jobs,” he said.

During his trip to Warsaw, Parmley will meet with business people and officials from Poland’s finance and development ministries. (vb/rg)
