The eight-episode series is to be directed by mother-daughter duo Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik, the portal said.

Netflix said the series would be a cold-war spy thriller depicting a world in which the Iron Curtain did not come down, after a 1982 terror attack undermined any Polish hopes of independence from Soviet Russia, wirtualnemedia.pl said.

Holland is not new to Netflix productions, having directed a number of episodes of the hit show House of Cards.

Erik Barmack, a deputy CEO at Netflix, said details about the show would be released this year, wirtualnemedia.pl said.

After opening a new office in Amsterdam and promising to work on productions with local producers, Netflix in May announced it was coproducing a series with Poland’s Platige Image, which would be based on the Polish “Witcher” (Wiedźmin) franchise, wirtualnemedia.pl said.

According to Gemius, Netflix had close to 753,000 users in May this year, while rival Showmax had just over one million, wirtualnemedia.pl said. (vb)
