Poles work 45 hours per week on average: study

The report reveals that high earners put in longer hours than other income groups.

Poles who are paid over PLN 3,999 (around EUR 930) work on average 50 hours per week. However, it is the self-employed who work the hardest, with an average 55-hour working week.

Meanwhile, a third of full-time workers on employment contracts work overtime.

Andrzej Kubisiak, the head of an analysis team at employment agency Work Service, which commissioned the report, said the research confirms the observations of the Polish National Bank (NBP).

“The central bank points to an increase in overtime work among Poles, which translates to higher wage pressure,” Kubisiak commented in the report.

“Low investment coupled with labour shortages prompts companies to extend their employees’ working time to keep their businesses going,” Kubisiak said, adding that such an approach is no solution in the long term as overworked employees are ineffective.

“Staffing costs go up, which all of us will feel the effects of in higher product costs,” Kubisiak said.

The study was carried out on a sample of 1,000 adults between 19-24 July. (aba/pk)
