This is no longer only true of farm produce and foodstuffs, the financial website money.pl has reported.

Window on the world

With a market share of 21.5 percent, Poland is the European Union’s largest exporter of windows.

Until 2014 Germany topped the list. Poland outperformed Germany in 2015 and strengthened its position further after that.

In 2016, Polish exports of windows increased by 0.3 percent to EUR 1.5 billion, while German exports shrank by 8.4 percent to EUR 1.4 billion, money.pl reported.

Polish furniture

Poland is also a powerhouse in the production of furniture, according to the report. It cites data according to which Poland is the sixth-largest producer of furniture in the world and the world’s fourth-largest exporter.

Poland produces PLN 42.45 billion (EUR 10 billion) worth of furniture annually, with exports exceeding PLN 41.5 billion. That’s over PLN 15 billion more than in 2011, the report says.

Polish companies ship most of the furniture they produce to Germany. Polish furniture exports to that country are worth close to EUR 3.5 billion. Other major markets for Polish furniture are Britain, the Czech Republic and France.

Polish silver and copper

Poland is a global powerhouse in the production of silver, which is chiefly due to the state-controlled KGHM Polska Miedź corporation.

KGHM is the world's largest producer of silver. It is also the world’s sixth-largest producer of copper, according to the report.

Washing machines and refrigerators

Poland is home to 30 household appliance factories, which have been built at a cost of around PLN 12 billion and employ about 25,000 people.

Although these are mostly foreign-run plants, their production makes Poland the European leader in the production of household appliances, according to the report.

Cosmetics

Poland is among countries that lead the way in the European cosmetics industry, with production and sales growing at a rate of 10 to 12 percent annually in recent years.

Polish cosmetics makers export their products to 130 countries worldwide.

At the end of 2016, the Polish cosmetics market was worth PLN 23 billion, growing by a respectable PLN 3 billion over the last three years.

Poland is home to nearly 100 large and medium-sized cosmetics producers and over 300 small and very small manufacturers of cosmetics, in addition to several hundred research laboratories.

Fruit

Poland also leads the charge in fruit production. One in every four apples grown in the European Union comes from Poland. Last year Polish apples accounted for 28.7 percent of all apples produced in the EU.

Poland enjoys a strong position in cherry production, being responsible for almost a third of the European market, ahead of Spain in second place and Italy in third place.

In the production of strawberries, Poland is the runner-up with an over 17-percent share in total production in the EU. Spain is first with 31.6 percent of total EU production, while Germany is third behind Poland.

Vegetables

In terms of vegetables, Poland is the undisputed number one in the production of carrots, and is also among the largest producers of cucumbers. Last year more than 20 percent of cucumbers on European tables came from Poland.

In all, Poland is the sixth-largest producer of fruit and vegetables in the EU.

Mushrooms

Poland is the largest producer of champignon mushrooms in Europe and the largest exporter of these mushrooms in the world.

In 2016, about 320,000 tonnes of champignons were produced in Poland, about 2 percent more than in 2015, data shows.

Processed foods

Poland is a leading producer of food in the European Union, and the role of the Polish fruit and vegetable processing sector is growing dynamically.

Poland is the EU’s largest exporter of concentrated apple juice and frozen fruits and the bloc’s second-largest exporter of processed mushrooms.

Fish

The Morpol company, based in the northwestern Polish city of Szczecin, is Europe’s largest producer of salmon. Since 2012, the company has been part of Norway’s Marine Harvest group, and salmon products made in Poland have been reaching consumers worldwide.
