Poland's PLN 1 bln candle industry

Poles spend some PLN one billion (EUR 235 million) on the roughly 300 million candles which they place on graves each year, said Puls Biznesu, as sales climax around All Saints Day on 1 November.

Poland is the world's main producer of the candle, called znicz, accounting for two-thirds of global production, and the sector employs some 100,000-150,000 people, the daily said.
The daily added that Poland is also the biggest market for the candles, which are also sold in Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and Slovakia.
They range from PLN 1.50 to PLN 40 each and can burn from eight to 72 hours, Puls Biznesu said.
On 1 November, Poland marks All Saints Day, a Catholic celebration of the dead, which is a public holiday and sees crowds visiting cemeteries across the country. (vb/di)
