Patents granted to Polish inventors up 20%

The number of patents granted to Polish inventors, research institutions and companies increased by 20 percent in 2017 compared to the previous year, the European Patent Office (EPO) has said.

According to a report released by the office on Wednesday, Polish researchers were granted 216 European patents last year, compared to 180 in 2016.

The overall number of patent applications submitted by Poles reached 469 in 2017, rising 14 percent year on year. This puts Poland well above the EU average, the PAP news agency reported.

Most patents filed by Polish inventors related to innovations in medical technology. This sector was followed by the mechanical components segment and the transport branch. (aba/pk)
