Teresa Czerwińska told public broadcaster Polish Radio that “2017 was the first year when we stopped public debt from rising in nominal terms.”

The decrease was due to factors including “the state’s reduced borrowing needs,” in addition to a stronger zloty (PLN), she said.

Meanwhile, Poland’s budget showed a surplus of PLN 4.46 billion (some EUR 1 billion, USD 1.3 billion) at the end of February this year, with increased collections from both personal and corporate income taxes as well as value-added tax (VAT), the finance ministry said in a statement on Friday.
