Some of the inspected toys were defective while others contained harmful chemical substances, the agency said on Friday.

The agency carried out spot checks in eight provinces, examining 222 toys offered by 92 companies. Over 80 percent of the products came from outside the EU.

“The results are a cause for concern -- the inspectors found fault with 30.7 percent of the inspected toys,” the agency said.

Nearly half the toys, 106 samples, were submitted for testing in specialised laboratories. “It turned out that 28 of them (26.4 percent) had faulty construction or contained harmful chemicals,” the agency said.

This year’s results are worse than last year’s, where out of 3,100 toys checked, nearly one in four proved unsuitable for children.
