Gov’t will help Polish flooding victims, official vows

The government will help farmers and other victims of flooding caused by storms in Poland, a senior official pledged on Friday.

Polish conservative MP Jacek Sasin, who heads the government’s Standing Committee, said some farmers were in trouble after being hit by a double whammy of drought followed by floods.
Firefighters were called out almost 1,500 times as storms rolled through large parts of Poland on Thursday and Friday.
A number of trails in Poland’s southern Tatra mountains have been closed to hikers after heavy rain turned normally quiet streams into torrents.
Warsaw earlier this week asked the European Commission to help farmers in Poland affected by drought, public broadcaster Polish Radio has reported.
The agriculture ministry recently said that more than 66,000 Polish farms have been hit amid scorching temperatures this year.
