Catching up with West is a priority, not adopting euro: Polish PM

Poland’s conservative government aims to help workers catch up with Western Europe in terms of earnings while adopting the euro is not its priority, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday.

Morawiecki was asked by public broadcaster Polish Radio about calls by euro supporters that his country should introduce the single European currency during the next parliamentary term.
Polish parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held later this year.
Morawiecki said his government's key priority "is not that Poland should adopt the euro. On the contrary, we think that our Polish zloty is better for the prosperity of Poles.”
He added: “Our position is that Poles should start to earn the same as in Western Europe and that’s what we’re striving for.”
The European Commission said in a report last month that the Polish economy is in good shape, unemployment is at a record low while social inequalities are gradually decreasing.
Morawiecki told Polish Radio on Tuesday: "We have a chance for the first time in 200 or 300 years to reach this level: in just five, 10 years to catch up with Italy and then France and later even richer countries.”
According to the European Commission, Poland notched up the third-fastest economic growth in the European Union in 2018, outperformed only by Ireland and Malta.
