Poles are increasingly turning to the internet to order food -- such deliveries shot up 50 percent last year, bringing in PLN 900 million (EUR 210m, USD 236m), the Dziennik daily has reported.

The value of online food orders is expected to swell fivefold within the next six years to hit PLN 4.5bn, according to Dziennik.

In 2015, the segment was estimated to be worth PLN 200m.

Ilona Grzywińska-Lartigue, from rideshare company Uber, said: “Poles’ eating trends are shifting.” She added: “They want to sample diverse cuisines.”

Magdalena Szot, an analyst with the PMR market research company, said the growing popularity of the food delivery sector is linked to laws limiting Sunday trading in Poland.

A law banning trade on Sundays was introduced last year. The rules allowed shops to be open on only the first and last Sunday of each month, with some exceptions.

This year the ban was stepped up to three Sundays a month. In 2020, trading will be forbidden on all Sundays except seven. The ban does not apply to online stores.
