Sawicki opened the ‘International Food and Hospitality Fair Aahar’ 2015 along with his Indian counterpart, as well as meeting with three government representatives during his tour.

Twenty-seven Polish firms took part in the fair.

Sawicki commented, “This is an interesting market, although it will require a large effort from Polish exporters and good organisation of our exporters.”

Although a previous official trip focused on facilitating Polish apple exports, Sawicki promoted various fruit and vegetables as well as dairy products including cheese.

The Minister pointed out that many health and safety requirements for food imports are used by India as a form of protection, and it is difficult to export to the country due to them.

Poland exported agricultural products worth EUR 6.4 million (USD 6.8 million) last year, double the amount in 2013 but still only representing a tiny proportion of the two countries’ annual bilateral trade of around USD 2 billion.

Sawicki added that his Ministry is planning to hold a ‘Festival of Polish Products’ in India this May, with the intention of convincing Indian importers about the quality of Polish goods.

Meanwhile Poland has been invited to the 2016 ‘Agro Technology & Business Fair’ hosted in Chandigarh.

Poland is also working on building better trade partnerships with North Africa. (sl/rg)
