"At the meeting in Bratislava we started the process of reforming the EU, a crucial issue for Poland," Polish PM Beata Szydło has said, following an informal summit of the bloc in the Slovak capital.

Despite differences, the Visegrad Group, comprising Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, took a joint position and presented a document with proposals for overcoming the EU's problems, Szydło told a press conference on Friday.

The V4's proposal include a new agreement on migration, which stresses the role of humanitarian aid, border protection and international cooperation.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the initative "interesting," adding that "looking for solutions is positive."

Under the plan, a "flexible solidarity mechanism" would be introduced, taking into account the "potential and experience" of each member state, when deciding on the number of refugees it could accept.

The Visegrad Group has been criticized by other EU countries for its stance on migration.

The informal summit of the European Union, without the UK, was held in the Slovak capital of Bratislava on Friday. It was the first such meeting after the UK's vote to leave the European Union. (ał/pk)
