The 91 km section, running between the northeastern towns of Ostrów Mazowiecka and Szczuczyn, is expected to cost PLN 3.5 billion (EUR 0.8 billion) and will be one of the last parts of Poland’s section of the Via Baltica to be completed.

Speaking in the city of Łomża, through which the road will run, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said: "I am satisfied I can present a deal… which we have long wanted, which Łomża needs, which will create a huge opportunity for both the city and the entire region."

Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Adamczyk added that the project is "vital" and "must be completed."

It is expected that tenders for three sections of the road will be launched before the end of the year, while remaining tenders will be announced in the first quarter of 2017.

Poland's Law and Justice government has previously declared that completing the Via Baltica is one of its priorities. The Via Baltica is itself part of the European E67 route which runs from Prague to Helsinki, covering 970 km. (sl/rg)
