Polish president on visit to Switzerland

Polish President Andrzej Duda is paying a three-day visit to Switzerland to meet with his Swiss counterpart Johann Schneider-Ammann and discuss the future of the European Union.

On Sunday, Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda will visit the Polish Museum in Rapperswil.
An official welcome ceremony for Poland’s leader is planned for Monday in Kehrsatz, near the Swiss capital, Bern. The two presidents are to hold talks, accompanied by the countries’ delegations.
Speaking about the meeting's agenda, senior presidential aide Krzysztof Szczerski said: "Switzerland is very important in terms of discussion on the future status of the United Kingdom, because it also has a special status in its relations with the European Union."
The European headquarters of the United Nations are in Switzerland, Szczerski noted. That is why it is "the place to discuss global issues in the context of our ambitions [regarding Poland's position within the UN]," he said.
Poland is seeking a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2018-2019.
Economic issues are also on the visit’s agenda. "This time, we are focusing on the promotion of Poland as a partner of innovation in the economy," Szczerski said.
On Tuesday President Duda will attend the concluding session of startup workshops, held at the Federal Polytechnic of Lausanne. Later in the day he will visit the famous European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva. (ał/pk)
