The legislation, approved this week by the House of Representatives and Senate, outlines sanctions against Russia, North Korea and Iran. It also blocks the president from easing any of them unless he obtains Congress’ approval.

The president “has now reviewed the final version [of the bill] and, based on its responsiveness to his negotiations, approves the bill and intends to sign it,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a written statement released on Friday.

The European Commission has voiced concerns that the new sanctions would affect European businesses.

According to reports, the legislation could hit the construction of Nord Stream 2, a planned gas pipeline connecting Russia and Germany.

Poland has been a vocal critic of the pipeline, which plans to circumvent Central and Eastern Europe.
