Poland’s 2017 budget deficit far lower than planned: finance minister

Poland’s budget deficit will stand at around PLN 40-41 billion (EUR 9.4-9.6 bn, USD 11.2-11.5 bn) at the end of this year, far less than originally planned, Finance Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a meeting of the parliamentary Public Finance Committee, Morawiecki, who is also minister for development as well as deputy prime minister, said that Poland’s public finance targets as set for this year were “safe.”
The deficit is likely to be no higher than 2.6 percent, “if not 2.5 percent,” of GDP, according to the EU methodology, he added.
“This is a positive surprise for rating agencies and financial institutions,” Morawiecki said.
Originally, the government planned that the deficit would hover around PLN 60 billion, not including an expected transfer of funds from the central bank, Morawiecki told the committee. (gs)
