Twenty five year-old Dawid Runtz of Poland has won Third Prize at the 1st Hong Kong International Conducting Competition.

The top accolades went to Gabor Kali of Hungary and Antoine Glatard of France.

The Pole, who was the youngest of the prizewinners, also received the Audience Award, together with Anton Torbeev of Russia.

Sixteen conductors participated in the event, selected from among 310 applications from 49 countries.

Runtz is a graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. In 2016, he made his debut with the Warsaw Philharmonic and was among four conductors selected to participate in the Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy.

Last year Runtz became assistant conductor to Jacek Kaspszyk, music director of the Warsaw Philharmonic. A month ago he was appointed music director of the Polish Royal Opera. He is also a composer. (mk/gs)
